Energy Healing for Caregivers

As I left the home of a medical exercise training client who’s typically composed, stoic wife had suddenly, unexpectedly crumbled into a heap of heart-wrenching sobs from the stress and exhaustion of round-the-clock caring for her suddenly, unexpectedly ill and incapacitated husband, I couldn’t stop thinking that she needed just as much care, attention and support as he had been receiving. The long hug I gave her, along with the (reluctant) assurance that she would be ok didn’t seem nearly enough to quell her apparently deep distress. Sadly, this wasn’t the first time I had been in a similar situation with a client’s caregiver and, as I drove from their home to my next client, I knew it wouldn’t be the last.

Caregivers typically hold many roles.

Caregivers are not just wives or husbands. They are parents, healthcare workers, children of older adults and anyone whose priority is the personal care and attending to of someone other than themselves. And it is the total immersion in this selfless role that causes many caregivers to ignore their own health, self-care and needs. Often, this neglect, which may be unintentional, leads to “caregiver burnout”, a term used to describe the development of symptoms such as feelings of overwhelm, depression, and irritability; changes in sleeping patterns, illness, weight gain or loss, emotional and physical exhaustion, and high levels of stress. In addition, caregivers may face challenges with finances, keeping up with other household duties and caring for others in the home (like children or pets).

Caregivers work so hard to ensure the well-being of others. The role can be arduous and may feel quite lonely at times. It is important for caregivers to prioritize self-care so that they can be at their best for their loved one or patient. Energy healing may be one way to do it.

My call to energy healing and reiki was born, in part, out witnessing scenarios like the one mentioned at the beginning of this post. The desire to care for the caregiver, to provide a service beyond my shoulder to cry on (which is a necessary role, as well!), and to be an empathetic medium for peace amid their storms. Energy healing through reiki and other modalities is a safe, gentle, compassionate, and loving method of:

  • reducing stress and feelings of overwhelm

  • restoring and recharging depleted, sluggish and/or blocked energy

  • supporting and strengthening the immune system

  • grounding and stabilizing energy on the physical, spiritual, emotional, and mental levels and

  • empowering the caregiver by providing them with 30 minutes to an hour of uninterrupted time for self-care.

Energy healing for caregivers is self-care.

The goal of energy healing is to restore and harmonize the balance and flow of energy to your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It is an ages old method of clearing blocked or stagnant energy, improving health, strengthening spiritual connections, and inducing feelings of peace and relaxation. Science is finally catching up with what our ancestors have always seemed to know – the body is an energetic system that can be positively affected with intention and non-invasive healing techniques.

An energy healing for caregivers session typically lasts 30 minutes to 1 hour and, although someone may experience a significant shift after just one session, it is recommended a person receive at least 3 healings to get the full benefit.
